lab for resilience

lab for resilience serves as a hub for rights-based initiatives and reclaim civic space in Turkey and beyond, building on the lived experience of rights defenders. At the intersection of human rights, gender equality, and cross-border solidarity, this lab brings together activists, scholars, journalists, and civil society actors to foster dialogue, and collaboration in increasingly repressive environments.

Challenging Patriarchy with the Crowds 


In this first event, Hafiza Merkezi Berlin (now antenna) hightlights gender struggles and discuss issues such as the recent strikes in Poland fighting for the right to abortions, threats to the Istanbul Convention, and the influence of conservatism and right-wing populism on the lives of women in both country contexts.

Selime Büyükgöze is a volunteer at Mor Çatı Women’s Shelter Foundation since 2011, a feminist organization working on the field of violence against women. She is mostly involved in communication activities, writing statements and reports for national and international bodies on violence against women in Turkey as well as monitoring national and international legislations. In addition to her work in Mor Çatı, she holds a PhD in communication and works as a university lecturer. 

Kamila Ferenc is a lawyer at the Federation for Women and Family Planning and the Foundation Against Rape Culture. She conducts court cases, often pro bono. She works in the field of women’s rights, mainly around sexual and reproductive health and rights, combating gender-based violence and discrimination. She’s an author of policy papers, guidelines and chapters to books on women’s rights.

Promise of Justice & International Law

In this second event, Hafiza Merkezi Berlin (now antenna) wants to highlight the current threats to the rule of law in both countries, by highlighting the struggle at the level of local and international courts, the impact of increasing nationalism on the legal sphere and potential threats to democracy that ensue with the lack of an independent judiciary.

Kerem Altıparmak has LLB (1995) and LLM (1998) degrees from Ankara University and PhD degree from Leeds University (2002).  He was the Director of the Human Rights Centre of the Ankara University, Faculty of Political Sciences until October 2017. He has also worked in a number of human rights projects with human rights NGOs, especially with the Human Rights Joint Platform in Turkey. He also worked with Prof. Yaman Akdeniz (İstanbul Bilgi University) in a number of freedom of expression projects. He won Turkish Publishers Association Award (2014), Halit Çelenk Legal Prize (2015), Columbia Global Freedom of Expression Award (2016) and Press Association of Turkey Press Freedom Prize (2016) with Professor Yaman Akdeniz. He was also the recipient of Franco-German Prize for Human Rights & the Rule of Law in 2017.

Małgorzata Szuleka is the head of advocacy at the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (Warsaw, Poland), one of Europe’s leading human rights NGOs. Since 2009, Szuleka has been one of the leading HFHR’s lawyers and researchers, often partnering with, among others, the European Agency for Fundamental Rights on major research projects concerning among other children’s rights, rights of victims of crimes, and access to justice. Szuleka has also been documenting the rule of law crisis in Poland by publishing numerous briefs and reports concerning the work of the judiciary system in times of reforms and attacks on judges and prosecutors. Her research and advocacy focus on issues of the independence of the judiciary, threats to the rule of law, and democratic backsliding as well as shrinking civil society space. She is a member of the boards of Polish and international organizations (Foundation Action Democracy and Civil Liberties Union for Europe). She is also a member of the Warsaw Bar.

Rights under Attack


In this event, Hafiza Merkezi Berlin wants to highlight the issues surrounding the recent pressure on human​ ​rights in both countries. A special focus on the underlying political changes leading to the recent situation, the undermining of legal mechanisms both at the national and international level, and the recent attacks on NGOs through legal means will be investigated in a contextual approach.

Márta Pardavi is co-chair of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, a leading human rights NGO in Budapest that works to advance democratic values, the rule of law and a strong civil society, the right to asylum and a fair criminal justice system. A lawyer by training, she has been awarded the 2018 William D. Zabel Human Rights Award from Human Rights First, Civil Rights Defender’s Civil Rights Defenders of the Year 2019 award and was chosen to be a member of POLITICO28 Class of 2019. Currently on a sabbatical, Márta is a Policy Leader Fellow at the School of Transnational Governance of the European University Institute, working on the Recharging Advocacy for Rights in Europe (RARE) project to connect 25 leading European human rights defenders in a capacity- and alliance-building programme.

Ceren Uysal is a human rights lawyer from Istanbul. During her practice in Turkey, she was working on many cases related to systemic human rights violations. She has been an executive board member of the Progressive Lawyers Association since 2015 and represents the association in several international organizations. As part of her activities, she has organized numerous fact-finding and trial observation missions together with her colleagues. Based in Vienna since December 2016, she worked as a guest researcher at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for a year. She was awarded the Dr. Georg Lebiszczak-Prize for Freedom of Speech in Austria.

Defying Hate with Pride


In this event, Hafiza Merkezi Berlin wants to highlight issues surrounding the recent attack on the LGBTI+ community, the implication that these attacks have on the work of the LGBTI+ civil society actors and organizations, potential threats to the safety of the individuals advocating for LGBTI+ rights and ways in which LGBTI+ civil society actors are strategizing and building networks with international allies

Viktória Radványi is an outreach coordinator and board member at Budapest Pride. She has been working at Budapest Pride since 2015. She is mostly responsible for online communication campaigns, network building on a national and international level, advocacy projects and grants. In the past 5 years she has worked in many areas Budapest Pride focuses on: the Budapest Pride March and the one-month long Budapest Pride Festival, organizing different community and cultural events and workshops, assembling panel discussions, and providing help for LGBTQ communities in the countryside.

Yıldız Tar is the Media and Communication Program Coordinator of Kaos GL Association. They work as chief-editor at KaosGL.org online newspaper. They are the author of following books: “Yoldaş Ben İbneyim: Solun LGBT ile İmtihanı” (Comrade I am Faggot), “Dönmelere Doyamadık”, “Translar Vardır” and “Patikalar: Resmi Tarihe Çentik” (Trails: Hacking the Official History).
