Defending others, liberating themselves: WHRD’s experiences in Turkey
The environment, in which human rights defenders in Turkey operate, seriously deteriorated, the space for civil society in Turkey has dramatically narrowed, and many crucial safeguards protecting defenders have been removed over the last decade. The rise of authoritarianism and the increasing threat targeting the civic actors in Turkey, has triggered these actors to look for new methods to continue their struggle. This has led many rights advocates in Turkey to identify themselves as ‘human rights defenders’ both to struggle for their own rights to advocate and to make use of the range of options available for their protection based on the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders.

In Good Times and Bad: Living Together
This project aims to discuss “living together with our differences” in an in-depth manner with journalists, scholars, activists and human rights defenders in order to challenge deepening polarisation and to strengthen democratisation in Turkey. This broader aim will be reached by informing the wider public about the transnational character of these rights-based debates and by training journalists about these issues to support citizens’ right toobtain information.

Local Struggles Transnational Strategies: Experiences from Poland and Turkey
The talk series aims to create a space for exchange to deepen the understanding of both contexts as well as to highlight the similar struggles of civil society actors in Poland and Turkey. While “shrinking civil space” has become the hot topic for civic actors in the last couple of years,
these talks are aimed to deepen the discussion on civic space by focusing on certain areas to
scrutinize how recent backlash affected these areas; and to discuss the challenges and coping
mechanisms with a comparative perspective.
